St. Jude Knights Hockey Club is excited to be hosting another “Try Hockey Free Day” for children ages 4-9 who are new to hockey. This event will be held on Friday, December 30th from 6:00-7:00pm at Southwest Ice Arena.  This is a great opportunity for children to try hockey and learn about the Knights program.  Equipment will be available if needed.  Members of the Pre-Hockey and Jr. Knights program will be on hand to assist in getting your child on the ice and answer any questions you may have.

For some of you this is the start of a great hockey career for your future superstar.

What should you expect?

Most kids that begin to skate can barely stand up and it's common to barely make it across the rink. Have no fear and don't pull the fire alarm! Almost every little hockey player started on the ice doing snow angels. In fact making snow angels may be their favorite part of the day. Some little hockey players may cry and are ready to get off the ice right away. Once again don't pull the fire alarm! Think of it this way: you are asking a child with a thin steel blade attached to a boot to skate up down an ice rink, it's not as easy as you think...trust me! Hockey takes some time to learn and it can take several sessions on the ice to get comfortable about skating from end to end. Please encourage your child on their adventure on the rink!

What do you need?

  • First complete the online registration: https://www.tryhockeyforfree.com/event_detail/1467
  • We ask that you have your child come in warm clothing; warm socks, mittens/gloves, sweatpants and a sweatshirt.
  • We do have gear available for those who want to wear it. You can also bring your own equipment if you have it available. All participants will be required to wear a helmet and gloves when on the ice. The skate rental will be available as well for no charge.

There will be a check-in table available to provide information about our hockey program and to answer any questions you may have. Any new player to our organization that registers for our Winter 2023 Session of Learn to Skate is eligible to receive a free bag of hockey equipment (skates and stick not included). All participants will receive a free hockey jersey and stick while supplies last.

We look forward to meeting our future Knights at the rink!
