Dear Hockey Family,

On behalf of the entire St. Jude Knights Hockey Club, please accept our sincere thanks for the enormous outpouring of love and support that you have shown to the Capuano family, our club, and our community in our time of need. You have proven once again that the only word that begins to describe the hockey community is FAMILY.

To hockey clubs, organizations, and families everywhere, thank you for reaching out to offer your support in too many ways to count. Thank you for your generous contributions to the Capuano Family Memorial Fund. Thank you for pausing to remember Coach Dan with a moment of silence. Thank you for wearing a helmet sticker to remember our hero. Thank you for talking with your players about the incredible and selfless service that first-responders like Dan provide every day.

To coaches, thank you for teaching our players life lessons that go far beyond athletic skills. Thank you for teaching the values of hard work and sportsmanship that Dan valued far more than goals or wins. Thank you for teaching our players to support each other. Thank you for sharing your words, hugs, tears, and prayers with our players. Thank you for being the extraordinary role-models that you are.

To hockey parents, friends, and volunteers, thank you for cheering our teams in the stands. Thank you for sharing your stories and memories of Dan. Thank you for praying with us at Queen of Martyrs Parish, at St. Rita High School, and in your own homes and communities. Thank you for braving the cold weather to tie purple and black ribbons to every tree and lamplight on the South Side. Thank you for coming out to the street corners in Mt. Greenwood to salute our friend. Thank you for coming out to Southwest Ice Arena, Oak Lawn Ice Arena, and the Morgan Park Sports Center to support our teams. Thank you for sending us your well-wishes in person, through email, through social media, and in the quiet of your own hearts. We received and felt them all.

To players, thank you for supporting your teammates when they needed you most. Thank you for celebrating with Nick when he scored the game-tying goal with only six second left in the game on Saturday. Thank you for standing by Andrew while the South Bend Fire Department came out to recognize him and honor him later that same afternoon. Thank you for being with your teammates when they needed you. Thank you for being a friend.

To the Capuano family, thank you for sharing Dan with us. Thank you for the countless hours that he gave to us while he coached our kids and helped us all learn from his example. Thank you for sharing his smiles, conversations, handshakes, jokes, and high-fives at the rink, in hotel lobbies, and in our homes. And, even in this extraordinary time, thank you for allowing us to share our memories and celebrate Dan’s life as we grieve and heal with you.

The hockey community is a family. We love you all, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

With love,
The St. Jude Knights Hockey Club

Dan is survived by his wife Julie and their three children, Andrew, Amanda and Nick.

Please keep the Capuano family in your thoughts during this difficult time.
